Abstract

One of the most prominent characteristics of rising prosperity is the rapid expansion of motor vehicle traffic. Some inherent side-effects are distinctly objectionable: unsafety, traffic congestion's and environmental hazards. The author reviews these items against the background of data presented at the Sixth World Highway Conference, held in Montreal in October 1970. Mixing in the plant is more expensive but gives better results as the mixture is more uniform-. Recent developments in the field of asphalt paving machines are: 1) electronically steered levelling devices; 2) compacting both by tamping and vibration, and 3) increase in working width up to 8- 5 m.
