Abstract

This article describes the construction of a Dutch sensation seeking questionnaire: the Spanningsbehoeftelijst (SBL). Taking the alternatives of the forced-choice items of M. Zuckerman's Sensation Seeking Scale (Form IV) as point of departure, an item pool was composed which consisted of 67 Likert-type items. The items were administered to a sample of 331 undergraduate students. Principal components analysis (with varimax rotation) on the intercorrelations among the items yielded four factors, which were very similar to the four dimensions of sensation seeking outlined by Zuckerman: thrill and adventure seeking, experience seeking, boredom susceptibility and disinhibition. Factor-scales were composed with reasonably high internal consistencies (alpha-coefficiëents between .72 and .81) and intercorrelations of moderate size ( the mean r was .24 for males and .23 for females). The results of several studies are reported, in which the construct validity of the SBL was investigated. (Author/publisher)
