Abstract

Until now, little research has been done into the advance of the mobile car telephone and its possible effects on mobility behaviour and traffic congestion. The explosive development of this new kind of communication demands a new study. Therefore, a literature review was made, interviews with experts and users were carried out, and a written inquiry was undertaken using more than 2900 mobile telephone users. Advantages of the use of a mobile telephone in a car can be: (1) the evasion of traffic congestion; (2) doing business from inside the car; (3) route planning, and (4) personal accessibility. A disadvantage is the limited capacity of the car telephone network and the high costs. Questions could be asked about the effects upon safety, mobile telephone use when driving the car.
