The psychology of the train passenger: a search for needs and drives of the train passenger. In this study are, besides the functional, also the psychografic needs of the customer at the centre. Customer’s needs are for NS the starting point of the provision of services. If we know what the needs of different types of people are, NS can check the current provision of services. By understanding these needs, new, not yet fulfilled, services can be developed. In a follow-up study understanding of the level of needs of certain services will be given, even in specific situation and times. In this way, the results of the study will be the inspiration to transform the provision of services to the needs of the customers, in order to rise the level of appreciation of the whole train journey. (Author/publisher) Nederlands abstract: In dit onderzoek staan naast de functionele, ook de psychografische behoeften van de klant centraal. De behoeften van de klanten vormen voor NS het startpunt voor de dienstverlening. Indien we weten wat de behoeften van verschillende (typen) mensen zijn, kan NS de huidige dienstverlening hieraan toetsen. Door inzichten in de behoeften kan ook nog niet ingevulde dienstverlening worden ontwikkeld. In een vervolgonderzoek wordt inzicht gegeven in de mate waarin behoefte is aan bepaalde diensten, zelfs in specifieke situaties en op bepaalde tijdstippen. De resultaten van het onderzoek vormen daarmee een inspiratiebron om de dienstverlening dusdanig naar de behoeften van de klanten te transformeren, opdat de beleving van de hele treinreis nog hoger gewaardeerd wordt.
