The role of IntelligentTransport Systems (ITS) in sustainable safe mobility. In the governmental memorandum Sustainable Safety a role of some importance is given to Sustainable Safety, a programme that was already initiated in 1992. In fact, the second phase of Sustainable Safety is marked, which is potentially an important step forward in the field of traffic safety and efficiency, amongst others, since ITS is explicitly introduced in the programme. However, problems are to be expected as well. A proliferation of systems is noticeable, consequently selection is certainly difficult. Besides, it is not clear who should do the selection in the first place. Moreover, ITS applications can have all sorts of unwanted side-effects that are difficult to determine. Nevertheless, such systems will increasingly claim a position in traffic and transport. (Author/publisher) Nederlands abstract: In de nota Duurzame Mobiliteit is ook een rol weggelegd voor Duurzaam Veilig, een programma dat in eerste aanleg al in 1992 is geïnitieerd. Hiermee wordt de facto de tweede fase van Duurzaam Veilig ingeluid, die een belangrijke stap vooruit moet gaan betekenen voor de veiligheid en efficiëntie van het verkeer, onder andere door de introductie van ITS. Dat wil niet zeggen dat er geen problemen te verwachten zijn met ITS, integendeel. Er is een wildgroei aan systemen te constateren waaruit het moeilijk selecteren is. Bovendien is niet duidelijk wie er zou moeten selecteren. Daarnaast kunnen ITS applicaties allerlei ongewenste neveneffecten hebben waar ook al moeilijk de vinger op gelegd kan worden.
