The role of parents in the informal learning process of children in the age group 4 to 12 years-old; A first investigation. Traffic education often comes in the form of education projects which are carried out by schools and offered to their pupils and sometimes their parents. However, the effects of such formal traffic education projects appear to be modest. In addition, acquiring safe behaviour takes a lot of time, exercising in practice, and examples set by others, meaning that schools have only a limited role in traffic education. SWOV therefore advices to pay more attention to the informal learning process; the process in which road users learn about traffic especially from their own practical experiences and from the examples set by others.
