Abstract

Based on a review of the literature it was concluded that the current yellow-timing at signalised intersections (in The Netherlands 3 seconds of yellow at urban and 4 seconds of yellow at rural intersections) should be extended with about one second to adapt to drivers'needs in normal circumstances. The results of a field study, in which such an extension of the yellow period was verified, show a halving of the number of run red offences.
