In an explorative study of the red light discipline of drivers, it was found that most "run red" offenses occur during the beginning of the red phase. The occurrence of these offenses appears to have a close relationship with the driver's decision during the pre-red period to continue, across the intersection. Literature was reviewed with respect to specific aspects of traffic signal control which may influence this decision behaviour of car drivers. The duration of the yellow phase was considered of prime importance.
