Abstract

To be able to recommend the application of road humps as a means of reducing traffic speed, each relevant traffic situation has to be analysed. Therefore the general concept of speed is considered in more detail. One type of speed which might be distinguished is the (maximum) speed justified by the road character. Only the reduction of this speed may bring down the actual speed pattern. Road humps can be a help, provided the reduction is relatively modest. They also should be accompanied by other speed restrictions caused by changes in the road aspect. This should prevent the humps as such to become an unexpected and dangerous element.
