Abstract

This report is one of a series of `Annual Road Safety Reports'. These are annual SWOV publications that deal with the scale and nature of road safety, together with its developments. The report presents an analysis of the accident and casualty developments during the period 1950-2002. Although the situations and developments in the Netherlands take priority, brief comparisons are made with developments in other countries. Trends, backgrounds, and explanations of the data are presented. The developments of a number of specific groups involved in accidents are also examined, such as the crash opponents of fatal accidents, and various two-wheelers ((light) mopedists, and cylists). Finally, the developments are presented in the context of the policy and road safety measures taken.
