Abstract

There are four times more fatalities and injuries for cyclists than for car drivers per year. Cyclists do cause however only few fatal accidents themselves. In 1981 356 bicycle fatalities occurred, while the number of fatalities among the other road users caused by a collision with a bicycle was only 5. The increasing use of the bicycle justifies a bigger part of the traffic and transport budget for the safety of cyclists.
