Abstract

A very important assumption of the multinomial logitmodel (MNL) is the linear additive structure of the utility function. As a consequence the marginal values of travel time are constant magnitudes. In the MNL model the utility of an alternative is expressed as a lineair function of the characteristics of that alternative and the characteristics of the traveller. In this study the focus of attention is primarily directed to the empirical verification of this assumption of linearity.
