How can we obtain more information on the behaviour and route choice of cyclists? Interview techniques have their limitations not only because of the costs but also in the tracing of the different route characteristics. It is also possible to use direct methods. The method of observation by following is one of these methods. The method is discussed and the results of the study into its efficiency are presented. The following of cyclists can be done easily and unconspicuously is not dangerous, has relatively low costs and gives relevant data on travel behaviour, use of the road network, characteristics of the network and safety.
