Abstract

This study concerns the problems of the main street in a small town. This Zuiderhoofdstraat is a street with various types of land use (mainly shops, but also offices, pubs/restaurants etc.). The space reserved for road traffic is intensively used by all modes, including two-wheelers. In this study the emphasis was put on reducing the volume of car traffic and on enhancing the shopping aspect of the street. Cosyness should be maintained or be brought back in again. The author gives some possible solutions and chooses for a ban on motor car traffic for only a small section of the Zuiderhoofdstraat, where only pedestrians and bicycles should be admitted.
