Abstract
Fast and reliable motorway incident management is instrumental in reducing traffic delay and increasing safety. Addressing the need for improved incident management in Europe, a project has been initiated, Incident Response with On-line Innovative Sensing (IN-RESPONSE). The motivation for IN-RESPONSE is the need for an integrated incident detection and response system that quickly responds to detected incidents to aid users in an emergency, make optimum use of the available infrastructure during the incident, and rapidly restore the road to normal traffic conditions. IN-RESPONSE can lead to an improved emergency response system that has a major social impact by reducing average delay for the accident victims receiving medical attention.
