Abstract
The aim of this report was to determine the characteristics of cyclists and vehicles involved in fatal cycling accidents. Data from Stats 19 on fatal accidents involving a cyclist in Greater London were collected from January 1985 to December 1992. In all 178 cases were analysed. The following data were analysed: a) location (inner or outer London); b) age and sex of cyclist; c) the vehicles involved; d) the manoeuvre that contributed to the accident; e) variations in fatalities with time (year, season, time of day, and day of week); and f) environmental conditions (weather and/or visibility). Among the conclusions reached is that heavy goods vehicles cause 30 times as many cyclists' deaths as cars and five times as many as buses.
