Abstract

The question of how to define the effectiveness of an injury-reduction device is investigated from a theoretical point of view. A distinction is drawn between measures expressing the effectiveness relative to the total variability in injury severity in all accidents, and those expressing it relative to the variability within particular circumstances in a particular accident.
