The literature on two delineation techniques used mainly on rural roads is reviewed: (1) reflectorized road studs placed on the travelled way to supplement road markings and (2) reflectorized post delineators placed alongside the roadway. Aspects considered include: functions and effectiveness of delineators; delineation practice in South Africa and other countries; types, maintenance and costs of road studs and post delineators; recommendations for uniform delineation practice in South Africa.
