Abstract

As a major contribution to its network operator role, the Highways Agency (HA) awarded a 160m (256m) Public Private Partnership (PPP) contract to Traffic Information Services (TiS). Under the policy direction of the HA, TiS will design, implement and operate England's national Traffic Control Centre (TCC) - an initiative which represents a key element in the delivery of the UK Government's Ten Year Plan for Transport. The TCC contract was awarded in March 2001 and TiS will have just over two years to install roadside equipment, secure operational agreements and build a national Traffic Control Centre before it becomes fully operational in early 2004. The contract continues until 2011, after which it is expected to continue. This paper gives an overview of the TCC initiative.
