Abstract

This article describes the design, structure and organisation of the before-study on road safety in the demonstration areas in eindhoven and Rijswijk. Results are given of the respective sub-surveys on accidents, and feelings and behaviour as far as traffic is concerned. The accident survey concerns the effects of new measures to improve road safety, of safety measures for cyclists and moped riders, and of conflict-free phases at traffic signals for cyclists and mopeds. The link between traffic densities and road safety is also discussed. In the studies the following aspects have been dealt with (through a home interview and behavioural observation): lack of safety felt by residents; link between opinions, traffic behaviour and accidents among residents; the possibilities of establishing detailed measures for cyclists and moped riders; the validity of the conflict observation method.
