Abstract

Over the past five years, the European Commission and the Member States of the EU have provided over 93 million Euro in support to a considerable number of road traffic management projects aimed at deploying ITS under the Trans-European Network for Transport structure. Similar levels of financial support are planned for the next five year period 2001-05. At present, there is a patchwork of fragmented regional and national ITS servives, rather that a homogeneous market. Based on a wide vision of ITS deployment throughout Europe, the TEN-T programme aims at establishing appropriate interconnection, interoperability and accessibility between services both on long-distance routes and in conurbation areas, providing an important step forward in implementation. This means avoiding missing links and promoting pan-European services. This paper will describe the cross-fertilisation and convergence activities underway and provide insights to the current status and future prospects related to ITS deployment in the European Union.
