The use of computers for the control of traffic lights, and the selection of programmes is reviewed. Some points of view regarding programme formation and phase selection are discussed. There is a differentiation between the strategic concepts or the macro control-the overall connections within the region and the tactical concepts or micro control (the short term fluctuations at each junction). Methods of evaluating computer controlled traffic light installations are briefly indicated. Such equipment could also be used for other traffic problems, e.g. indicating parking space.
