Abstract

This chapter deals with the main statistical design concepts for travel surveys. A general conceptual framework for travel and transport surveys is presented first. Then, several important sampling schemes for travel surveys (panel surveys, systems of independent subsamples, interpenetrating subsamples, and rotation sampling with partial replacement of units) are investigated and estimators are derived. The statistical properties of these estimators are discussed and practical applications of point- and interval-estimation procedures for travel-survey data, using appropriate computer software, are described.
