Abstract

An outline of the design and the results of an assessment study for short- and medium-range ITS (Intelligent Transport System) scenarios for Germany are given. Two scenarios were defined on the basis of current developments and future expectations, as `Conservative Scenario' and `Progressive Scenario' for two time horizonts (+5/+10 years) respectively. Considering impact overlaps between different ITS application areas both scenarios were designed as integrated scenarios comprising all relevant functions and technologies, both conventional and new ones. The quantitative assessment was performed on the basis of the `critical vehicle mileage' on the motorway network. In order to provide guidance for the planning and deployment of ITS, the project's overall objective was to outline the range of possible impacts and give their magnitude as well as give a rough estimate of cost-benefit-ratios for different decision makers and user groups.
