Abstract

Similar to all government agencies that have responsibilities in transportation infrastructure, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) continually seeks to improve its ability to design and assess pavements. Recent topics of interest include the use of geosynthetics, the use of marginal materials, the inclusion of reliability concepts, and the development of both equipment and software tools to help with predicting the performance or upgrade requirements of existing structures. This paper describes the evolution of USACE design procedures for soil-surfaced and aggregate-surfaced roadways. Also, recent developments toward new mechanistic-empirical stress-based criteria are described and demonstrated with example data obtained from pavement test sections.
