Abstract

Roads are for vehicles to ride on. Accordingly, the author starts his book with a discussion of motor vehicles and the requirements for comfortable, safe riding surfaces. He then discusses the foundations of roads, the soils of which they are composed and the problems which they present. The last section deals with pavements, both flexible and rigid. The choice of pavements is discussed, and the reasons for choosing one type or the other are presented. Tables and formulas are provided to assist the engineer in making his choice.
