Abstract

In June, 2001, RIOH (Research Institute of Highway) made a testing sample vehicle follow its running lane automatically in TCPG (Tong County Proving Ground) in China. The running lane was marked by magnetic nails. It was the first try in China in this research field. This paper describes the design and implementation of the control system for lane-following on IHS with magnetic markers embedded in. The control system consists of several parts as following: roadway guidance establishment, on-board offset sensor, servo device for steering wheel, on-board computer control system and so on. Based on the control system designed here, the experiment results have reached and exceeded the requirements of ISO/TC204 WG14 standardization working draft for lane departure warning systems.
