Abstract

Congestions on freeways have become a common phenomenon leading to delays, reduced traffic security, increased fuel consumption, and severe air pollution. There are several ways for influencing and improving freeway traffic flow one of which is on-ramp metering. The ATT-project EUROCOR addresses increased modeling and control of corridor traffic networks. Within the scope of this project an application of coordinated ramp-metering is prepared for the site of the A10-West in Amsterdam involving a number of different control strategies. The particular investigations reported here include derivation of coordinated feedback control on the basis of the linear quadratic (LQ) optimization theory and testing the derived linear quadratic interval (LQI) control law through simulation. This control strategy has been known under the name METALINE. The METALINE strategy developed in this report will be applied to the A10-West in Amsterdam to test its effectiveness compared with other alternative strategies.
