Abstract

In the early nineties the concept of sustainable road safety was launched in the Netherlands. This paper presents the work done by CROW to translate the more general concept into practical guidelines regarding sustainable road design including the environment. The approach is to provide instruments for the road authorities to change the existing road network into a sustainable safe one. Based on the philosophy behind the concept, experiences made and common sense a methodology was developed consisting of three steps: (1) functional criteria of the road network; (2) operational criteria of the road categories; and (3) design criteria for roads in each category. The paper focuses on a more detailed description of these three steps.
