Abstract

Recently in Australia concrete flags have begun to be used in circumstances where the pavements must accept traffic. This paper reviews world practice in the use of concrete flags under traffic. The development of an Australian industry code of practice for the design and use of concrete flags under traffic is then detailed. Following a comprehensive review of design methods for concrete flag pavements, it was decided to develop a new design procedure based on mechanistic analysis. The new design method is presented as a series of design charts. The paper ends by emphasizing the need to integrate specification and detailing with structural design. (a)
