Abstract

An injury detecting abdomen section which can be used in any side impact dummy with a part 572 derived thorax-lumbar spine interface has been developed. The design is based on built-in tolerance limits with a go/no-go detection for testing in regulations with respect to near-side collisions with intruding doors. This abdomen section principally consists of a rigid penetration stop around the spine that is covered by a mass carrying composite material which in compression activates switches between material and stop, whenever force and penetration limits are exceeded. Biomechanical performance and tolerance values were obtained from previous studies by association peugeot-renault. The performance of the system in the evaluation tests of the eec phase iv programme is generally satisfactory but indicates the need for some improvements.
