The advantages of using small roundabouts are described. Their increasing use in Germany and the involvement of a multidisciplinary team in their design are outlined. The 'new generation' of roundabouts in Germany have diameters of up to 40m, a single circulating lane and single lane entries and exits. Details are given of basic design elements, materials used and facilities for cyclists and pedestrians. Traffic signs, road markings and lighting are discussed. The experience of operating Germany's roundabouts is described in terms of safety, cost, environmental aspects and public acceptance.
