Abstract

This Departmental Standard is applicable to both single and dual carriageway roads in both urban and rural areas. It is used to derive the design and the appropriate values of geometric parameters for use in the design of road alignment, including the procedure for the assessment of parameter values less than the desirable minimum. It provides the basic principles to be used for coordinating the various elements of the road design, which together form the three dimensional design of the road. Several documents are now superseded by TD 9/93, these are: TD 9/81 (and amendments); layout of roads in rural areas, published by HMSO, 1986 (and metric supplement); Roads in urban areas, published by HMSO, 1966 (and metric supplement); Motorway design memorandum (1962 et seq); TA 32/82; and TA 43/84.
