Abstract

The CDV (Transport Research Centre) was appointed to elaborate a framework system which concerned improving of road safety in the Czech Republic. One of the work package of this framework was to evaluate a new manual concerning work zones, because the old one and the last used methods did not comply with new conditions. An evaluation was made of the European traffic safety standards, regulations and control traffic devices with regard to national experiences and traffic conditions. In the manual (called The Principles for Temporary Traffic Signs on Roads) all existing and new recommended traffic signs and devices, their sorts/classes, description and application to a variety of work zones are described. The recommended measures depend on the duration of work zone, traffic volume, the type of work. Special measures and traffic control devices are recommended for moving work zones. All these measures (about 80 Traffic System Plans) are described in detail and illustrated.
