Abstract

The development of equipment to monitor the skidding resistance of the road surface is described together with the use of this equipment to assess the properties of aggregates so that adequate friction is available after trafficking. The latest specifications for the `polished stone value' of the aggregate is included as well as the Standard for Skidding resistance for the principal road network. Recent work on the texture of surfacing is presented; it appears that the roughness of the surfacing has a marked effect on all types of accidents. This finding is being investigated further in order to assess the costs and benefits for an in-service texture requirement on the principal road network in the UK. (A) The German title of this article is: Entwurf der mehr Sicheren Strassendecken.
