Abstract
This publication considers the factors leading to improved roadside safety, the European standards for passive safety, the experience of Durham County Council, Scandinavian experience and practice, manufacturers' guidance on barriers, crash cushions, parapets, passively safe traffic signs, lighting columns, gantries and electrical safety, and ways of making traffic signs visible. The appendices provide a list of passively safe products and of sponsors and their services / products.
