Abstract

On the basis of an analysis of the structure of pedestrians travel it is concluded that walking demand is a function of environment quality. The paper reviews in detail the safety and comfort spaces for walking environments classified as vehicle favoured or pedestrian favoured. A descriptive model of favourable and unfavourable pedestrian environment is suggested, and used to explain the need for a new pedestrian planning paradigm.
