Abstract

Desirable characteristics of systems which control the movement of road vehicles in an urban area are listed. It is assumed that the main method of control is by traffic signals at street intersections and that the signals are coordinated from a central computer. A traffic control system should be: safe, reliable, effective, adaptable, informative, automatic, comprehensible and impressive. Each characteristic is considered and related to current practices and possible further development.
