This paper describes the DESPINA project, part of the European DRIVE II/ATT programme, which aimed to develop on the basis of a European network, an information service using different telematic means of communication. These were audiotex, videotex, personal computers and information points. In order to meet the objectives, specific databases were set up for information on the road network, road events and incidents, a calendar of traffic difficulties and public transport timetables. The automated telephone answering service of the audiotex application has great potential because of its easy accessibility. The videotex application is available through Minitel terminals. The personal computer application employs small receivers which pick up messages via the radio paging network. Public information points are installed in France and Germany in transport locations and also some streets. First analyses of the project indicate that if good quality information is available, users will change their travel choice.
