Abstract

The practices and policies of various countries and the research into problems concerned with incidents on motorways and other high speed roads are described. The important research areas covered are the cause of incidents, the effectiveness of various surveillance methods for detecting incidents and of various means of controlling the consequences of incidents, including ways of evaluating surveillance and control systems.
