Abstract

Detection distances were reported for road signs of different reflective intensity, colour and size perceived under varying light conditions during field experiments in night driving. If the reflective intensity of material was greater than 1mcd/lux cm 2 the median and 90th percentile detection distances for dipped headlights were at least about 700 m. and 400 m. respectively. For high beam lights all materials had medians of 1000 m. or more.
