Abstract

This paper is an investigation of the feasibility of using traffic flow information compiled in real-time by freeway traffic surveillance, communication, and control systems for detection of accidents, vehicular break-downs, and other incidents that temporarily block traffic lanes. Various aspects of the detection system are discussed.
