Abstract

It is concluded that the detectability of relative movement from the behaviour of the taillights of a leading car, expressed as a threshold velocity in km/h, is a function of initial viewing distance, exposure duration and direction of movement. This is true when either change in angular separation or in size/brightness is the cue.
