Abstract

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), implemented all over the world, has become an important and practical traffic management technique. The major thrust of the ITS is to improve the safety and operational efficiency for the movement of people and goods through innovative ITS users services. These comprehensive users services include the Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS), which monitoring the infrastructure usage, Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS), which disseminate real-time traffic information directly into travellers cars; Advanced Public Transportation Systems (APTS), designed to make transit operations more effective; Advanced Rural Transportation Systems (ARTS), which provide weather and traffic surveillance on rural roadways; and Commercial Vehicle Operations (CVO), which address the needs of the trucking industry. Among all ITS subsystems, the detection system plays an integral element that provides all the necessary traffic and environmental information to the ITS infrastructure. This paper describes the analysis process and true costs relating to the selection of detector systems for ITS applications overseas. As indicated, it is important to consider a multi-sensor, multi-source fusion environment that can utilize different multi-sensors to achieve traffic operational and management objectives. The following sections describes the application considerations, available technology, advanced application needs, selection criteria, life-cycle analysis, and recommended approaches.
