The challenge for Unley was to develop a framework (Transport Strategy) that charts future directions to protect all that the areas offers, but at the same time to recognize the different interests and demands thrust upon it as a city adjacent to the CBD. A ‘new’ approach was needed to address the inherent conflicts between regional transport demands and interests and local demands and interests. The key to the approach is the integration of and relationships between transport, land-use and the local environment and balancing the needs for movement and the needs for amenity and environmental quality. The approach would look beyond a road hierarchy and the notion of ‘predict and provide’ and engage thinking outside of the square, to encourage use of alternative modes.
