Abstract

This report presents the development procedure in the UK of a practical child pedestrian training pack, based on previous materials entitled "On the move" which were used with children. The project also aimed to test and evaluate the pack for use nationally. The initial consultation process revealed three resource requirements: a training manual; teachers' worksheets with notes; and volunteers' support material for adults assisting with the teaching process. The materials and procedures were tested in a small number of schools and the scheme evaluated by questioning teachers and adult helpers and observing the children's practical skills. The teachers liked the materials; the volunteers felt equipped by their training to work effectively with the children; and the children appeared to enjoy the activities and showed signs of improving their pedestrian skills after training.
