Abstract
This paper states the targets for UK governmental policy on reducing road casualties and fatalities, and the policies needed to achieve the targets. Conditions for success include analysis, partnerships, enforcement, monitoring, research and adaptability. The UK government's strategy also has to take into account international policy and standards. New technology has produced enforcement devices related to road safety and law enforcement can include driver re-training measures. Further research is to be done in many areas including road user behaviour, impairment, speed management and vehicle safety. Finally the author considers risk assessment as a part of the overall strategy.
