Abstract

Local authorities and school transport providers have the task of determining whether the location of Pick-up and Drop-off points (PUDOs) used for school travel are safe for childern to use. This is a significant responsibility given that some local authority areas in Scotland have over 4000 PUDOs being used for school transport. MVA Consultancy were commissioned by West Dumbartonshire Council and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) to develop a consistent, rigorous and easily applied assessment process. This paper describes the methodology which was developed based on an innovative and unique approach for increasing the safety of transport users at PUDO points. The process is versatile enough to address the issues at rural and urban PUDO locations and allow for future adaptability to fulfil other requirements. (Secondary source).
