Abstract

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT), Japan, announced "The general principles for creating a beautiful country" in July 2003. In relation to the principles, MLIT prepared "The guideline for aesthetic barriers" in March 2004. The scope of this study is the development of a standardized aesthetic aluminium barrier for bridges based on the principles of this guideline. The paper introduces the process of the development of an aesthetic aluminium barrier in Japan. Through the results of static tests with trial products, the development of aesthetic aluminium barriers was considered successful. By using the characteristics of aluminium, the development of barriers that have structural rationality, a beautiful shape and a reasonable price was possible. Furthermore, through the evaluation of the trial product, the effectiveness of these aesthetic barriers was confirmed. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no.
