Abstract

SMART (Signalised Intersection Optimal Advice and Research Tool) was developed to assist traffic engineers at traffic control centers to decide on the most appropriate traffic control strategy at intersections. Several stages were followed in the development phase of SMART. Firstly, main software packages used for the analysis and design of intersections were analysed and evaluated using a common framework. The results were then used to develop a 'pilot' expert system, called PROPER, to test the feasibility of the development methodology. Finally, the 'full scale' KBS SMART was developed and evaluated. The final version of SMART was completed incorporating comments and feedback from experts and users. The PROPER and SMART expert systems were developed using XpertRule (knowledge based systems generator and software engineering tool) and they run under the Microsoft windows environment. (A*)
